The most successful TikTok creators understand something a lot of training teams miss:

  • Attention is earned.
  • Engagement is data-driven.
  • And clarity always beats complexity.

Lesson 1: Get to the Point (Fast!)

On TikTok, creators have seconds to hook you.

If they don’t? You scroll.

The same is true in learning. This is why the Reaction level of the Kirkpatrick Model and the Awareness step of the Learner’s Journey are so important!

Learners are busy. Distracted. Overwhelmed. If your training takes too long to get to the point, it doesn’t matter how brilliant it is; they’ve already mentally checked out.

Instructional designers need to front-load value.

What’s in it for me? (WII-FM!) Why does it matter? What do I do with it? Say it early and say it clearly.

Lesson 2: Short Is Not Shallow

The best TikToks pack powerful insights into tight timelines.

They simplify without dumbing down.

Training can (and should) do the same.

Not every course needs to be an hour, or 30 minutes, or, whatever. You don’t need an hour-long course to teach a five-minute skill.

Sometimes, a quick-hit video, a swipeable guide, or a well-timed microlearning moment is more effective than a full-blown module.

A simple “short but not shallow” structure looks like this:

  1. Bite-sized content
  2. Delivered in sequence
  3. Reinforced over time

That’s not “cutting corners” – it’s respecting the learner’s time.

Lesson 3: Let Data Drive You

TikTok creators don’t guess what works.

They track performance, read comments, tweak formats, and optimize for engagement.

Good instructional design does the same. I mean, that sort of sounds like the ADDIE cycle: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. And that evaluation feeds back into the analysis, design, development, implementation, etc.

You don’t just launch a course and hope for the best. You:

  • Review completion rates
  • Analyze quiz results
  • Collect learner feedback
  • Iterate and improve

Data does not have to be the enemy of creativity. Instead, let it be the engine that feeds improvement.
